Yes. During most residential termite fumigations in California, designated operable windows must be left open at least three inches. The fumigator will determine which windows must be opened based on the structure and the aeration procedure being used.

Although the windows are partially open, the entire structure is enclosed and sealed inside the fumigation tarps.

Why Are Windows Left Open?

Open windows help air and fumigant circulate throughout the enclosed structure. They are also important during the aeration process, when powerful fans move fresh air through the home and remove the fumigant.

The California Aeration Plan establishes specific ventilation procedures that fumigators must follow before a structure can be tested and cleared for reentry.

Does Every Window Have to Be Open?

Not necessarily. The required number and location of open windows depend on the structure and the fumigator’s approved aeration plan.

Windows that cannot be opened by ordinary means—such as those blocked by heavy furniture, nailed shut, painted shut, or otherwise inaccessible—may be handled differently. On some multistory homes, certain ground-floor windows may also remain closed.

The fumigation company must make the final determination. Homeowners should not decide which required windows to leave closed without discussing it with the fumigator.

How Should I Prepare My Windows?

Before fumigation:

• Unlock operable windows as directed.
• Remove items that prevent required windows from opening.
• Notify Tiger Termite of windows that are broken, painted shut, nailed shut, or difficult to operate.
• Remove or disable alarm sensors that could be damaged or triggered when windows are opened.
• Follow the fumigator’s instructions regarding window screens, locks, and security devices.

Do not force open a damaged or painted-shut window. Let us know about the condition before the fumigation so the property can be evaluated.

Can I Use Window Locks or Dowels?

For added security, a window lock or dowel may be used to limit how far a required window can open. The window must still be able to remain open at least three inches and must meet the fumigator’s preparation requirements.

Confirm the placement with Tiger Termite before installation. A security device must not prevent the fumigation crew from setting up or aerating the structure properly.

Is the Home Secure During Fumigation?

California fumigation procedures require the structure to be secured against unauthorized entry. Warning signs are posted, and approved secondary locks are placed on exterior entry doors.

The tarps conceal and surround the structure, but homeowners should still remove valuables and take reasonable security precautions before leaving. Tiger Termite cannot guarantee against theft or unauthorized entry during fumigation.

When Can the Windows Be Closed Again?

Do not enter the structure or close any windows until the licensed fumigator has completed the aeration process, tested the air, and officially cleared the property for reentry.

Once the property has been released for occupancy, you may enter and close the windows normally.
