Is Orange Oil an Alternative to Whole-House Fumigation?

Orange oil is sometimes advertised as a natural alternative to whole-house fumigation for drywood termites. Orange-oil products can kill termites when properly applied to a located infestation, but they are localized treatments. They do not provide the same coverage as whole-structure fumigation.

That does not mean every home with drywood termites must be fumigated. The appropriate treatment depends on the number, location, accessibility, and apparent extent of the infestations found during an inspection.

What Is Orange Oil?

Orange oil is derived from orange peels and contains an active ingredient called d-limonene. Certain registered products can be injected into infested wood to control drywood termites.

For a localized application to work, the infestation must first be located. The product must then reach the termites inside their galleries.

Orange oil may be considered when:

• The infestation appears isolated.
• The affected wood is accessible.
• The termite galleries can be accurately located and treated.
• There is no evidence suggesting additional hidden infestations.
• The customer understands that only the identified areas are being treated.

What Are the Limitations of Orange Oil?

Drywood termites live entirely inside wood and can remain concealed behind drywall, stucco, siding, roofing materials, and other finishes. A home may also contain multiple colonies in different locations.

Orange oil does not circulate throughout the structure. It treats only the areas where it is applied. If a hidden colony is not detected or the product does not reach all termites in a gallery, that infestation may remain.

This limitation applies to localized termite treatments generally: their success depends heavily on finding every infestation that needs treatment.

How Is Whole-Structure Fumigation Different?

During whole-structure fumigation, the building is enclosed with tarps and a fumigant is introduced throughout the structure. The gas penetrates accessible and inaccessible areas, including wood and spaces hidden behind finished surfaces.

The primary advantage of fumigation is that it treats all drywood termite infestations within the enclosed structure at the same time, including colonies that were not visible during the inspection.

Fumigation may be recommended when:

• Drywood termites are found in several areas.
• Activity appears widespread.
• Infestations extend into inaccessible locations.
• Previous localized treatments have not resolved the problem.
• Greater certainty of whole-structure control is desired.

Does Fumigation Prevent Future Termites?

No. The fumigant is removed during aeration and leaves no lasting residue. Whole-structure fumigation eliminates drywood termites present during treatment, but it does not create a permanent barrier against future infestation.

Is Orange Oil Safer Because It Is Natural?

The word “natural” does not automatically mean that a product is harmless or appropriate for every situation. Orange-oil termite products are pesticides and must be applied according to their labels.

Homeowners should evaluate any treatment based on:

• Whether it can reach the infestation
• Its effectiveness for the conditions found
• Preparation requirements
• Potential risks and limitations
• Warranty coverage
• The likelihood of hidden termite activity

When Is Local Treatment Appropriate?
