How to Control Scorpions in Chino Hills

Scorpions are occasionally found around homes in Chino Hills, especially properties near hillsides, open land, or natural areas. They are most active at night during warm weather and usually hide during the day.

While most California scorpion stings cause localized pain, homeowners should still avoid handling scorpions and take reasonable precautions to keep them out of the home.

Where Do Scorpions Hide?

Scorpions prefer dark, protected areas. Around a home, they may hide:

  • Under rocks, boards, bricks, and landscape materials
  • Inside woodpiles
  • Beneath outdoor furniture and stored items
  • In cracks in block walls or foundations
  • Around garages, sheds, and utility areas
  • Under dense ground cover or accumulated debris

Scorpions feed on crickets, cockroaches, spiders, and other small insects. Properties with abundant insects, moisture, and hiding places are more likely to attract them.

Remove Hiding Places Around Your Home

Reducing shelter is an important part of scorpion control:

  • Remove unnecessary boards, bricks, rocks, and debris.
  • Store firewood off the ground and away from the house.
  • Keep grass mowed and shrubs trimmed.
  • Avoid allowing dense vegetation to touch the structure.
  • Wear gloves when moving firewood, rocks, or stored outdoor materials.
  • Repair plumbing or irrigation leaks that provide moisture.

Be careful when reaching into dark areas or moving objects that have been undisturbed.

Seal Scorpions Out

Scorpions can enter through small openings around the exterior of a home. Inspect the building and correct potential entry points:

  • Install tight-fitting door sweeps on exterior and garage doors.
  • Repair damaged window and door screens.
  • Seal cracks around foundations, siding, windows, and doors.
  • Seal openings around pipes, cables, and utility lines.
  • Cover vents with suitable screening without restricting required airflow.
  • Check the gap underneath the door leading from an attached garage into the home.

Exclusion is especially important when scorpions are repeatedly found indoors.

Reduce Other Insects

Because scorpions are predators, controlling the insects they eat can make the property less attractive to them.

Keep outdoor trash areas clean, eliminate standing water, and reduce unnecessary nighttime lighting near doors and windows. When outdoor lighting is needed, bulbs that attract fewer flying insects may help reduce prey near the structure.

Reducing other insects can help, but it may not eliminate scorpions by itself.

How to Find Scorpions at Night

Scorpions naturally glow under ultraviolet light. A UV flashlight can make them easier to locate after dark.

Wear closed-toe shoes and never pick up a scorpion with your bare hands. Keep children and pets away while inspecting the property.

Sticky traps placed along walls or near suspected entry points may help detect indoor activity. Keep traps where children and pets cannot reach them.

Does Pesticide Treatment Work?

Scorpions can be difficult to control with pesticides alone because they hide in protected cracks, walls, rocks, and other concealed areas. The best results generally come from combining:

  • Removal of hiding places
  • Sealing entry points
  • Reduction of insect prey
  • Targeted pest-control treatment when appropriate

Repeatedly finding scorpions inside may indicate an entry problem or favorable conditions around the property that should be corrected.

What Should You Do After a Scorpion Sting?

If someone is stung:

  • Move away from the scorpion and do not attempt to handle it.
  • Wash the area gently with soap and water.
  • Apply a cool compress to help reduce pain.
  • Contact Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 for guidance.

Call 911 immediately if the person has difficulty breathing, experiences a seizure, collapses, or cannot be awakened. Children and anyone experiencing severe or rapidly worsening symptoms should receive prompt medical attention.
