Carpenter Ants vs. Termites: How to Tell the Difference

Carpenter ants and termites can both damage wood, but they do so for different reasons. Termites consume wood as food. Carpenter ants do not eat wood—they excavate it to create nests and passageways.

Correct identification is important because carpenter ants and termites require different treatment methods.

What Do Carpenter Ants Look Like?

Carpenter ants are among the largest ants found around homes. Depending on the species, workers may range from approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch long.

Common identifying features include:

  • A narrow or pinched waist
  • Elbowed antennae
  • A smoothly rounded upper body
  • Black, reddish-black, or mixed coloring
  • Workers of different sizes traveling along the same trail

Carpenter ants often forage during the evening or at night. Seeing an occasional ant indoors does not necessarily mean there is a nest inside the building. The ants may be traveling indoors from an outdoor colony in search of food or water.

Carpenter Ants vs. Winged Termites

Winged carpenter ants are sometimes mistaken for termite swarmers. Look closely at their antennae, waists, and wings.

Winged carpenter ants generally have:

  • Elbowed antennae
  • Narrow waists
  • Front wings that are longer than their rear wings

Winged termites generally have:

  • Straight or beadlike antennae
  • Broad waists
  • Four wings of approximately equal length

If you are uncertain, save a specimen or take a clear photograph for professional identification.

Do Carpenter Ants Eat Wood?

No. Carpenter ants do not consume wood as termites do. They remove wood to create galleries for nesting.

Carpenter-ant galleries are generally smooth and clean. Termite galleries may contain soil, mud, or drywood termite pellets, depending on the termite species.

Carpenter-ant nests frequently begin in wood that has been softened by moisture or decay. As a colony grows, the ants may extend their galleries into sound wood. A large, established colony can weaken wooden components over time.

Signs of a Carpenter-Ant Nest

Possible signs of carpenter ants include:

  • Large ants regularly appearing indoors
  • Ant activity during the evening or at night
  • Ant trails leading into cracks, wall openings, or damaged wood
  • Coarse, fibrous wood shavings beneath an opening
  • Insect parts mixed with excavated material
  • Faint rustling sounds inside wood or walls
  • Winged ants emerging indoors

The material removed from a carpenter-ant nest may resemble sawdust. It is different from drywood termite pellets, which are small, hard, and six-sided.

Where Do Carpenter Ants Nest?

A primary carpenter-ant colony is often located outdoors in:

  • Tree stumps
  • Dead or damaged trees
  • Firewood
  • Fence posts
  • Landscaping timbers

Indoor nests are frequently satellite colonies associated with a larger outdoor colony. Inside a building, carpenter ants may nest in moisture-damaged wood, wall voids, hollow doors, insulation, window frames, or subfloor areas.

Finding and addressing the colony is more effective than simply spraying the ants that are visible.

Why Moisture Problems Matter

Indoor carpenter-ant activity is commonly associated with moisture. Leaking roofs, plumbing problems, clogged gutters, poor drainage, or inadequate ventilation can contribute to wood decay and create favorable nesting conditions.

Correcting the moisture problem is an important part of long-term control. Treating the ants without repairing the leak or replacing badly damaged wood may allow the problem to return.

How to Help Prevent Carpenter Ants

Homeowners can reduce carpenter-ant risks by taking the following steps:

  • Repair roof and plumbing leaks promptly.
  • Replace decayed or badly damaged wood.
  • Keep gutters and downspouts functioning properly.
  • Improve ventilation in damp attics and subfloor areas.
  • Trim branches and shrubs away from the building.
  • Seal openings around utility lines, windows, and doors.
  • Store firewood off the ground and away from the house.
  • Remove dead stumps and unnecessary wood near the structure.
  • Keep food in sealed containers and clean up spills.

These measures can reduce favorable conditions, but they cannot guarantee that carpenter ants will never enter a building.

Why Spraying Visible Ants May Not Solve the Problem

Only a portion of a carpenter-ant colony leaves the nest to forage. Killing the visible ants may have little effect on the main colony or any satellite nests.

Effective control usually requires identifying nesting locations, correcting moisture conditions, removing damaged wood when appropriate, and selecting a treatment that reaches the colony.

Avoid applying household sprays randomly inside walls or around suspected nest openings. Improper treatment may scatter the ants or make it more difficult to follow their trails and locate the colony.
